Guest Speaker: Honorable Francis J. Larkin, a key figure in the establishment of the University Of Massachusetts School Of Law at Dartmouth.  In 1992, after serving in the Massachusetts judiciary system for over two decades, he accepted the position of Deanship at The Southern New England School of Law.  Shortly thereafter, with the help of many others, he relocated the School from a “storefront” in New Bedford to its present setting in North Dartmouth.  Larkin also supervised the building of a new ten million dollar state of the art law building and expanded faculty and staff.  In February of 2010, the law school became part of the University of Massachusetts system.  It is the Commonwealth’s first public law school.  Judge Larkin recently received personal recognition as “The Most Outstanding Professor of the Fraternity in the Nation for the Scholastic year of 2009-2010” by Delta Theta Phi, an International Law Fraternity, with chapters in over eighty law schools in the United States and abroad.

In addition to the monthly speaker, the group will award the annual scholarship of $500 to their 2011 recipient, Ms. Melissa Gilbarg, and conduct the swearing in of their 2011-2012 board members.

Member News and Announcements

Winner of ABWA South Coast's $500 Scholarship Winner

The Scholarship Committee has announced the winner of this year's scholarship is Melissa Gilbarg.

To be attending BU for her Masters in Social Work

  1. GPA 3.93 highest of all applicants
  2. Most passionate essay
  3. Best interview
  4. Good  volunteerism
  5. Great reference letter

Melissa’s personal story starts as an 18 year old HS graduate who could not go to college; but would not give up her dream of a college education and better life for her daughter and herself. By persevering she got her BA in sociology starting @ BCC then UMASS Dartmouth. During this time Melissa started volunteering at the Coalition Against Poverty and 5 years later was hired as their director; which was the same year she obtained her BA. She has spent a great deal of time advocating for public policy issues affecting low income families. She has lead delegation meetings with elected officials and organized lobbying days at the State House. But her main passion has been getting the young people of New Bedford who are challenged economically & emotionally to graduate from HS; and is perusing her master’s degree to be a counselor in the public school system. She will be attending BU in the fall. Finally as a wife and mother of 3 children Melissa has learned to juggle family, education, and work all at the same time.
